Echinacea ( Echinacea purpurea and Echinacea angustifolia ) belongs to the Composite family. Known for its immunostimulating and antitviral properties, it is useful for promoting the immune system and treating the symptoms of colds .
PROPERTIES:
Echinacea root contains polysaccharides that give the plant immunostimulating properties , for this reason it is used in phytotherapy to promote the natural defenses , as it stimulates the immune system, thus supporting the body against infectious attacks .
The great interest in the properties of echinacea derives from its ability to activate the phagocytic action of lymphocytes and strengthen the specific immune system of adults and children. The mechanism of action is expressed through an increase in leukocytes , in particular in polymorphonuclear granulocytes (or neutrophils) and in monocyte-macrophages of the reticulo-endothelial system, used to engulf (eat) harmful foreign agents (bacteria, fungi, etc.).
The plant also contains flavonoids (such as luteolin, kaempferol, quercetin, apigenin); derivatives of caffeic acid (echinacoside, chlorogenic acid), chicoric acid, polyenes, alkylamides and essential oil. In particular, echinacoside has an antibiotic and bacteriostatic action, capable of inhibiting the replication of bacteria that are difficult to control; while echinacein gives the plant corticosimile anti- inflammatory properties .
Finally, the presence of chicoric acid and caffeic acid have an antiviral action , such as to hinder the penetration of the virus into healthy cells.
Regular intake allows you to prevent (especially in periods when our body is subject to greater stress) and treat the symptoms of colds such as fever, infections of the respiratory system (cold, cough) and urinary system (cystitis) .
For external use , echinacea is also used for the preparation of ointments and lotions for the skin, with an immunostimulating , protective , anti- inflammatory action, in case of scars, canker sores, ulcers, dermatitis in general. The healing property is based on the ability of the plant to accelerate tissue regeneration and to localize the infection .
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Echinacea has few side effects . Its immunostimulating action makes it contraindicated in patients on immunosuppressive therapy (transplants, autoimmune diseases)
HOW TO USE: 1 or 2 capsules 2 times a day before meals with a glass of water
