horsetail , or horsetail, is a plant known and used since ancient times, which owes its name to the characteristic ponytail shape it assumes during the summer. The main therapeutic use of this plant is closely related to the properties of silicon.
This trace mineral participates in the calcification processes of the bone, favoring the deposition of calcium.
Silicon intervenes in the formation of connective tissue, facilitating the formation of the bond between proteins and mucopolysaccharides, helping to maintain joint cartilage and vessel walls intact. Promotes bone repair and the uptake of other minerals in the bones.
There are no official RDAs for silicon, however a daily human requirement of 5-20 mg is calculated.
Thanks to its diuretic property it can be useful in oedematous states, in the stimulation of diuresis and in case of bacterial diseases and inflammatory states of the urinary tract. The silicon present in horsetail, in the form of silicic acid, is water-soluble, while in other plants it is not bioavailable and is eliminated in the faeces.

Remineralizing action

Silica is part of the calcium absorption mechanism; for this reason horsetail supplementation is recommended in cases of osteoporosis and bone remineralization after fractures and operations, in particular in quantitative changes in bone mass. The mechanism is not yet clear, but there is a close relationship between calcium and silicon, for which the latter can favor the increase of the former.
Silicon intervenes in the development of connective tissue and in the biosynthesis of collagen, contributing to the maintenance of the health of joint cartilages.
Horsetail is also rich in calcium carbonate, potassium sulfate, magnesium, iron and manganese. In in vivo experiments, silicon has been shown to play a decisive role in bone calcification mechanisms.
In a randomized double-blind Italian study, the action of dietary silicon intake was examined in 122 women with menopausal and senile osteoporosis. After one year, improvement in bone metabolism was observed, as well as that of important parameters, such as double-beam bone densitometry.
In osteoporosis the drop in the blood level of silicon is greater than that of minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, fluorine and magnesium. Positive effects on the growth of teeth and long bones were found in in vivo experiments.

Diuresis and urinary tract disorders

The diuretic activity of horsetail occurs without altering the body's electrolyte balance.
Due to the delicacy of its action, combined with a remarkable ability to eliminate chlorides, it is particularly suitable for those suffering from nephritis. Indicated in all conditions with alterations of the mechanisms that regulate the exchange of liquids at the level of the blood and lymphatic capillaries, it is also used as an adjuvant in anti-cellulite treatments since, by promoting diuresis, it counteracts water retention.
The increase in diuresis, in which flavonoids and saponins participate, seems to be the consequence of the increased elimination of chlorine, sodium and potassium.
In some studies it has been found a detoxifying action against lead, for which it can be indicated in purification programs in rheumatic and dermatological disorders.
Horsetail is able to increase the volume (up to 70%) and acidity of the urine, important parameters for fighting infections of the lower urinary tract: therefore it is indicated in case of infections of the ureters, bladder and urethra, as well as in prostatic disorders, but also to promote the expulsion of small kidney stones.

Skin and skin appendages.

Silicon is a structural element of the connective tissue and enters the constitution of the main macromolecules such as elastin, collagen, proteoglycans and glycoproteins, of which it promotes the renewal. Its optimal content in the body is therefore essential for hydration, elasticity and skin cell regeneration, capable of strengthening hair and nails.

METHOD OF USE

1-3 capsules per day to be taken with water or other drinks possibly during the meal. To increase its diuretic benefits, it is recommended to drink at least one and a half liters of water during the day.

Warnings: contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation and in subjects suffering from edema caused by heart and kidney disorders.
