Syrup for oral use with a mucolytic action based on acetylcysteine enriched with a tropical and apricot taste.

Therapeutic indications

Solmucol Mucolytic Syrup is used to make the phlegm more fluid and therefore more easily eliminated in patients who have acute or long-lasting (chronic) respiratory diseases. Contains acetylcysteine, an active ingredient belonging to the class of "mucolytics", drugs that act by thinning the mucus in the respiratory tract (phlegm).

Dosage and posology

Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

  • Adults: the recommended dose is 10 ml of syrup (equal to 200 mg), 2-3 times a day, for 5-10 days.
  • Children over 2 years of age: 5 ml of syrup (equal to 100 mg), 2 to 4 times a day (according to age), for 5-10 days. In case of respiratory tract diseases that last for a long time (forms of chronic respiratory diseases), you will have to continue the therapy for a few months, according to the doctor's instructions. The maximum dose is 30 ml of syrup (equivalent to 600 mg) per day. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

Contact your doctor if you do not notice any improvement or if you notice worsening of your symptoms.

How to use

Take Solmucol Mucolytic Syrup by mouth. To reconstitute the syrup:

  • tear the guarantee seal and screw the cap clockwise until the powder falls into the bottle;
  • shake vigorously until the powder is completely dissolved and a homogeneous solution is obtained;
  • to take the syrup, unscrew the cap and pour the dose into the measuring cup found in the package.
  • Then, carefully screw the cap back on.

Do not mix other medicines in the syrup.

Overdose

If you take more Solmucol Mucolytic Syrup than you should In the event of an overdose you may notice nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In case of accidental ingestion / intake of an excessive dose of Solmucol Mucolytic Syrup, consult your doctor or contact the nearest hospital as appropriate measures may be necessary.

Contraindications

Do not take Solmucol Mucolytic Syrup:

  • if you are allergic to the active substance or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • if you are pregnant or breast-feeding unless your doctor tells you otherwise
  • for the treatment of respiratory diseases in children less than 2 years of age, as mucolytics such as Solmucol Mucolytic can create airway obstruction.

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Tell your doctor if you notice the following side effects during treatment with Mucolytic Solmucol:

  • uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people) nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, inflammation of the mouth (stomatitis), pain in the abdomen; more or less sudden onset of skin lesions, such as spot or diffuse color changes (rash), itching and hives, possible signs of allergy; swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing (angioedema); headache, fever; tinnitus (ringing, hissing, ringing, whistling or other persistent sounds in the ears); increased heart beat (tachycardia), decreases in blood pressure.
  • rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people) indigestion (dyspepsia); difficulty in breathing (dyspnoea).
  • very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people) bleeding (haemorrhage).
  • not known (the frequency of which cannot be estimated from the available data) swelling (edema) of the face; bronchial obstruction.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, do not take this medicine unless your doctor tells you to. If you suspect or are planning to become pregnant ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Special warnings

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Solmucol Mucolytic if:

  • have or have ever had a stomach or duodenal ulcer, especially if you are taking medicines that cause stomach problems (gastric damage);
  • have asthma;
  • notice after taking symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and allergic reactions such as change in the appearance of the skin associated with irritation or swelling of the skin (skin rash); the administration of the medicinal product in this case must be suspended.

Pay attention:

  • when you open the sachet you may notice a very strong and pungent odor (sulphurous odor). This odor does not indicate alteration of the medicine but is typical of the active ingredient;
  • if you have difficulty getting rid of phlegm. Your doctor may recommend some techniques to avoid the accumulation of secretions, for example postural drainage or bronchoaspiration;
  • you may have difficulty breathing (bronchospasm) during treatment, especially if this has happened before or if you have asthma. If this happens, stop taking Solmucol Mucolytic immediately and consult your doctor.

Information about some of the ingredients: Solmucol Mucolytic Syrup 100 mg / 5 ml syrup contains: maltitol. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicinal product.

Expiry and retention

Check the expiration date indicated on the package. The expiry date indicated on the package refers to the product in intact packaging, correctly stored. Store below 25 ° C. Once reconstituted and opened, the syrup must be used within 20 days.

Warning : do not use the medicine after the expiry date indicated on the package.
