Iron is essential for the production of red blood cells and often must be supplemented to avoid the risk of anemia. Folic acid is an essential component of erythrocytes and a key factor in the synthesis of red blood cells. An optimal supply of folic acid fully enhances the supply of iron, improves its absorption and makes it more “bioavailable”, facilitating its optimal use in the red blood cell production process. Vitamin B12 is another critical element of erythrocyte synthesis and a structural component of the iron binding site present in every red blood cell. Vitamin C, present in biologically active quantities, has an antioxidant action and makes gastric absorption of iron more effective.
