The chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus L.) is a shrub that grows in the beds of streams and on the banks of rivers in valleys and hills of the Mediterranean and Central Asia. The ripe fruit, the size of a peppercorn, is the part of the plant whose extract has been used for centuries in the treatment of various disorders of the female hormonal cycle, such as premenstrual syndrome, breast tenderness and menstrual irregularities.
