Dry extract of Valerian root
Valerian is a herbaceous plant, up to one meter high, belonging to the Valerianaceae family, quite widespread in the temperate climate areas of Europe, North America and Asia, where it grows spontaneously in wooded areas, on moist soil. There are many varieties, but the most used for therapeutic purposes is Valeriana Officinalis, and in particular the one that lives in the mid and high mountain regions, up to almost 2,500 meters above sea level, whose roots contain about 1% of a essential oil with a mildly sedative action, useful for promoting night rest. With regard to the active ingredients present (Valepotriati, Valerenic Acid, Valeranone, Valerianol and others), the difficulty encountered in identifying the fundamental one is curious: in fact, it seems that none of them are effective individually. Only their union in a kind of chain, the links of which reinforce each other, is able to produce the well-known relaxing effects.
